Adsoft's Chrischun Fassbinder and Ancient Shriner Give The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life a Bad Name in Second Life.

Pictures like this of ad land spam lots destroying our beloved second life mainland are nothing new these days. They seem to keep popping up even though the majority of SL residents have voiced an extreme dislike of this nasty practice that often forces people to buy back there views at way above market extortion prices, or be forced to look at crap, spinning prims, and flashing lights that devalue there hard earned land. What is new is seeing seeing this nasty practice associated with such a decent well known organization like the Relay For Life/American Cancer Society. RFL is using the AdSoft network run by Chrischun Fassbinder and Ancient Shriner to promote a kiosk design contest. People are already talking about it on group chats and forums. Many have decided to send e-mails and note cards to RFL in hopes that they get a better understanding of the way ad farms are viewed in sl, some even threatening to stop any and all support they once had for the organization until they pull this type of advertising and contributing to a different worthwhile cause.

Am I upset at RFL/ACS? Not in the least. I assume they had no idea about the way our community operates and feels about at this form of advertising. I would assume it had to be a case of outside business uneducated in SL society being convinced by an unethical sl insider or ad network that this was a great way to promote themselves. I'm sure they would never knowingly subject there worthwhile cause to bad publicity even in a virtual world. The ones I'm upset at are Adsoft's Chrischun Fassbinder and Ancient Shriner. I can't believe they would sink so low as to knowingly allow or convince the American Cancer Society to use there network. No matter what they personally believe about spam lots in Second Life, they are completely aware of how our community looks at this as a whole. I really hope they didn't accept money for this "service" on top of it. To bad ACS never read anything about the backlash Coldwell Banker received from the community when they hired these guys to help start there SL presence.

I just hope that after RFL hears about this, and I'm sure they will several times, that they pull out of this advertising method and continue to find SL methods that are both effective and good for our community.

Ancient,
We want to thank you for your donation of advertising space. Your
donation is very kind and generous; we appreciate your support. As
Second Life continues to grow, we are experimenting with different ways
of advertising. We do not think that the kinds of ad space you are
donating is going to fit into our marketing mix. Again, your donation
is appreciated and we hope to maintain your support through the 2008
Relay season and beyond.

Thank you,
Fayandria Foley, David Jacobs, RC Mars, and Synergy Devonshire

The Irony

There is a certain irony on this issue in so far as ad farms being used for what seems to be legitimate and tasteful advertising (as opposed to say adult friend finder) is drawing so much scorn.

Ad farms of course are a scourge on the landscape and a thorn in the side of mainland but I wish people would complain to LL about ad farms as vociferously as they're complaining to RFL.

I yelled, I shouted...

Even talked to Robin Linden who redirected me to Lewis PR who then quoted the website at me.

Linden Lab is hands off. So who do you complain to? That is part of the problem.

I'd say informing RFL of how they are being portrayed is appropriate. Anything more than that, well...

I agree

No I agree that informing RFL is the right thing to do, but I feel that this is again a case of people being so brainwashed by "We don't get involved in resident to resident disputes" that they have given up complaining.

People need to keep complaining to LL.

Well, nowadays...

I just write stuff down and move on. Complaining could be a full time job, and it doesn't pay. :-)

It all started with a bad idea, apparently.
