When I read about the first Animal Shelter in Second Life, I thought it was another PR attempt by a large corporation - but I did some digging, and I was wrong. It is actually linked to a real animal shelter in Jamaica: The Animal House.

Now that is cool - seeing someone from the Caribbean region linking a worthy cause to a virtual world, and vice versa. You can stop in, get a scripted animal for a fee - and help support an animal shelter in Jamaica. Seriously. You can check out the place: Shark (102,123,60).

If you really like animals, this is a cool opportunity to have a pet in Second Life while helping real animals. It is on a smaller scale than the WWF presence, but it is more focused as well. And it seems that it has direct results.

And the quote on the Animal House website, by Mark Twain, is golden:
