WWF Presence In Second Life

WWF - Fly Like An EagleThe WWF, formerly known as the World Wildlife Fund, has entered Second Life:

“WWF set up the island as a way to help people learn about conservation issues and the need to live sustainably,” said David Cole, Online Outreach Manager at WWF International. “We want to be able to show people that WWF has solutions to the real environmental issues affecting their ‘first life’.

“We hope that Second Life residents will become a community that helps us build and develop the island and at the same time learn about conservation in a fun, engaging and interactive way.”

Enable Interactive already helped lay the foundation1, it seems, and it is a nice foundation.I got quite a few nice pics from the island.

Conservation Island

WWF Landing AreaConservation Island can be found at WWF (138,199,41), and is well worth the trip. It is one of the more visually appealing areas I have had the pleasure to visit in Second Life; I'm an outdoors sort of person (though my time on the computer is somewhat of a handicap). Teleporting in lands you on a platform with a waterfall spraying water over you - perhaps to make sure that you don't contaminate the island with those other places that you have been. We won't discuss those here.

A small town is nearby, where you can watch a movie, marvel at the large windmill (with an apparent 3 phase plug connected to a building). Notecards of information are dispensed from many things upon touch. The stores don't sell much, but WWF does inform and also offers some generally good advice. Someone snuck in a funny.

I took a lot of pictures, which you can see here. Overall, I encourage everyone to visit - WWF doesn't want your money, it wants you to pay attention to some things - and you can enjoy yourself in the process. It is a very fun place to explore. And, if you have ideas and/or time:

WWF - Help Develop

Visiting the island reminded me that in the near future I'll be in [w:Suriname], and was given an odd request I intend to honor. While there, maybe I'll meet some of the WWF folks in Suriname as well. Then maybe other people can make fun of my attempts at Dutch.

1Made possible with the generous support of South West Screen and the South West of England Regional Development Agency. It is kind of interesting how so many SL developers are popping up on the radar...
