As I check my inventory for things to toss up for sale like I do every few weeks or so, I start wondering about the things I could do to stop getting the ever embarrassing IM that asks for a freebie or a few spare Lindens. As I thought about it, I really started to actually think about it. If you know what I mean. So, I leave this story for the people out there who sometimes find themselves asking for some help.
Make your SecondLife get a job! Yes, you should take that as the same push and nudge that your parents taught you, or as alot of you have taught your own kids. Don't get me wrong, for alot of people, having a job in SecondLife is the last thing on their mind. They don't mind paying small fees here and there to have the simple things of the second world. However, the rest think because they mastered the skill of Installing SecondLife, the world has not only become their oyster, it has been spiced, battered, fried and put on a shiny plate in front of them. Wrong. In fact, the world is your oyster, but like any oyster in the sea, you're going to have to find it, the sea is quite big, so be prepared.
One of the first things you should do is determine how you will utilize SecondLife. Will you be Prince Charming and sweep all the beautiful women from feet, or will you be the Kingpin of us all and growth your wealth to buy an Island in the real world? Let's face it folks, you're here to play, get paid, or both! After you have determined your new SecondLife role, you should think about ways to cover that monthly bill, or the new shiny necklace your Avatar is now sporting. Keep reading ..
For the ones who want to get rich quick and buy half of the world, skip having lunch at Red Lobster for a day, or skip a few starbucks, your choice. Use your saved up cash and buy an annual membership from SecondLife. At $72, it's kind of steap I guess, but you're now saving $3.95 a month (for the penny pincher in you). That's not all! You now get a weekly stipend of 300L! That's right, every week, 300L. With your saved money from the local starbucks, buy a nice little 512sqm parcel of mainland, not much, but it's a start. So, you're all paid up for 1 year, you have a deluxe 512sqm parcel of land, you're making 300L per week already and you're pondering on ways to improve your SecondLife wealth.
You can start by deeding land to the group I'm sure you've already created, and named something like 'Bob's Massive Wealth Fund'. In the long run, deeding the group will be nothing shy of important to you. You get a 10% bonus for deeded land, and you can give special access to your new land manager while you sit on the beach sipping your apple martini. If you rent for around 512L per week, which is a mediocre deal--in a year you would have made around 42,000L, and you can pay your annual membership once more. Should you invest your new fortune on growth, or should you go straight to your favorite mall and splurge?

Sounds good
Sounds good for beginning. However, approx. L$ 45,000 is not enough for my living (Red Lobster & Starbucks not included) :-)
Can't wait for part 2!
Nice post.
While [w:Linden Lab] is having some problems, it is in their interest to resolve them.
I'll tack on here as tastefully as I can that there is a rather low cost eBook available too: Making Your Mark in Second Life: Business, Land, and Money. It is meant for new people, and for $5 new folks can get an idea of how to shop for land, as well as some general guidelines for starting a business.
It *is* a shameless plug for my RL avatar, but I think it could be useful for some of the new folks entering. If anything, it can help them avoid losing some money. :-)
