The Beeb miss the point

The BBC have an article entitled "What happened to Second Life?" which can be read here. The article is pretty one sided and struggles to come to terms with the fact that Second Life is still thriving, despite the lack of media hype. The Beeb should really hang their head in shame, they couldn't find one independent person singing the praises of Second Life? The only positive part of the article comes from Mark Kingdon, the Beeb really should do better.

The comments section on the article finds Second Life fans, how about that? Amazing, and yet the Beeb chose to cite Adam Pasick (AKA Adam Reuters). They chose to talk of how American Apparel left after a year but fail to mention that IBM are still a strong presence. They manage to find a former user who left after three months but they couldn't find one single long term resident? Please, this is shoddy work from the Beeb.

However there are parts of the article that are interesting, the comments about mobile technology for example. Linden Lab themselves have mentioned how the rise of the laptop was problematic in their development of graphics and that issue isn't going away as people use smaller mobile devices more often.

The learning curve is a problem, many people encounter this issue, others move on. Not being able to find something to do is another issue, which is an area where group limits and the functionality of the event listings come into play. These are all issues but they are not insurmountable and many people master the learning curve, find something to do and enjoy their Second Life experience.

There is one rather humourous comment from someone who complains that you have to pay for everything in Second Life, interesting that he has that impression considering there's a raging debate about freebies!

Linden Lab aren't taking this lying down, indeed they posted a blog post about it, which can be read here. This was posted yesterday with an absolutely mammoth sized picture, fortunately someone has resized it. Now first of all, I do find it rather humourous that the lab are complaining that M was approached to do an interview about "a look at Second Life today - what's it up to, where's it going, why so quiet in the media after such great press a few years ago, etc." I find this humourous because not long back I attended an office hour that was about "Freebies, Demos, and Promo offerings on XStreet" that somehow got morphed into a policy to introduce listing fees for everyone selling an item of L$1 or more on XstreetSL, so providing input on one thing and then discovering that it ends up being about something else is an area where residents have experience, maybe Linden Lab will understand how that's not such a great thing to do to people now, hey?

However the blog post does give an overview of where Second Life is today and rightly points out that businesses are here, education, non profits and fortune 500 companies. The post also points out that more enterprises level solutions are in the offing as well as the new viewer and that Second Life is a platform for individuals as well as business. I hope they mean this as there has been a distinct impression that they are looking to shove out individuals to make way for business, "business friendly mainland" is still causing me concern.

M probably should have mentioned The Open University have a presence in Second Life, the Beeb are very familiar with The Open University and air shows which OU students are encouraged to watch as part of their courses, he could have also name dropped The US Navy, Government involvement, The FBI, yadda yadda yadda. There are a huge amount of use cases for Second Life, something the BBC article doesn't seem to be interested in.

Second Life is going to be around for quite some time and it's still thriving, despite the trials and tribulations some of their decisions bring to residents, it's not going anywhere and is still showing a healthy heartbeat.

Re: The Beeb miss the point

whew for a moment I thought It was me that missed the point...:) I often do btw.

I wrote a reply to the story on the BBC website, but I was warned in submitting it, that it was subject to being edited and may not make it on the site...I really Hate that! Now.. I realise that most regular Newspapers won't publish all letters to the Ed ect..but we who blog, are now so used to being able to have comments published unless closed or overly abusive...that it concerns me that most of the comments are slanted away from SL. My bigger concern here is that M walked squarely and surely into a trap...they used his name to help "sell" the story but used only a very small portion of his original interview, which came over as desperate and boring...The BBC also allegedly told him a half truth about the slant of the story. L.L PR dept should have prevented this from happening if at all possible.

I have not idea of the figures,  but even when we were in the middle of the Hype Cycle..(and thats what brought me in)...there was still loads of press around laughing at weirdoes in SL. And the "it will never work naysayers". The comments on the BBC site, although mostly negative must be taken seriously...this is what people reading that article will read! 1. its hard to use 2. its full of weirdos. 3 you can't make money in there. 4. the CEO is desperately trying to save  it from failing by proffering a boring Enterprise solution...1400 businesses sounds very Lame on real life world scale sorry...
Failure of something touted to be the NEXT big thing is always a great story for press...it is also part of the Gartner Hype cycle. We might be in the enlightenment stage but Im not sure about the rest of the world....

I think at this stage L.L has to stop promoting the boring side of S.L and its CEO, (Mark is a lovely guy but...he isn't nearly as exiting as a Housewife/failed Rockstar/retired professor making good and fame in SL) and start promoting the interesting and exiting part of SL. The residents! the days of not promoting residents and treating us like fodder has to stop! We are the reason that SL is exiting there are so many good news stories and success stories in SL that I don't have enough broadcasts to showcase them all! All the material is there....just read some good SL magazines, some great blogs and watch Treet.tv shows!

No One cares amongst the likely users of SL in the wider world, who M Linden is or Who Pip Linden is....IT techie commentators might, but right now, L.L needs to appeal to the great unwashed....and they need to keep us here.
1. Lower prices on Land....and tier, 2.promote the amazing thing people are doing here on S.F besides boring conferences, and weirdo sex fiends...No one outside of SL knows what the hell we all do on here! sure there are little stories around, but on a large scale there has been more press about Phillip Linden and M than about the incredible creativity and opportunities in SL that is a large part of why people do stay.

If anyone wants a list of my top 10 success stories let me know! This is what needs to be promoted not M Linden and Enterprise. Personally I do not believe that Enterprise  will save L.L bacon...I think an influx of regular everyday fodder will. But we need to keep them.

The BBC refers to comparisons with other social media, but Facebook ain't easy to use first up, & neither is Twitter both have a learning curve but whilst learning it...you don't feel exposed to weirdos and you can easily find places to help with setting it up. People don't join twitter or Facebook thinking they will have an instant huge freinds list, why do they think that they will in SL? there is a perception here that is not right...join SL and make great freinds? yes...but it takes work of course. My kids played Club Penguin for a while one of the best things about that game was that you got a free house right away that people had to be invited to. Time to acclimatise to Penguin before you join in the population. Noobies in SL land at a welcome area that is anything but welcoming, I know  that when I landed there I just wanted to get away from it I was terrified arriving there...people trying to hit on me, sell me stuff...its like arriving at a strange airport where you don't know the language, look like a tourist and everyone is trying to get something from you, you need to get the hell out of there not, wander around learning the culture at the entry point!

It is time for L.L to Promote US L.L how to do it? well I don't know....everything gets gamed...FIC does exist....but right now I'd be happy for anyone in SL to get a leg up in the press so we can have some good news stories getting through about SL.  There is enough material on my show T.L and other Treet.tv shows Metaverse Network and podcasts for press to find stories they like...without anyone feeling there was preferential treatment from L.L  Ideas anyone?
