New Ad Policy
Don't be surprised to see some new players come on the scene as result of the licensing/legitimizing of inworld ad placements. In March of 2007, Electric Sheep hired a specialist to create an inworld ad network that had a very soft reference at the 2007 SLCC. (They were launching OnRez at the time and this was not ready to roll.) The concept was to allow residents to place textured objects on their land (regardless of parcel size)that linked to a system allowing RL purchases. Not sure why it was not deployed, though I have to think that giving over placement control of RL companies ads to residents in the recent anti-adfarm environment played some role.
However I know Sheep has developed this system and would be suprised if other affilated companies like Millions of Us have not also put some effort against this type of project. At least I think they would have a hard time passing up a potential revenue stream like this. It would finally allow them to present potential advertisers with real exposure matrices, which has been a long-term complaint in SL.
While you might see a couple of the current "resident" players get a license, I will be surprised if most don't go to the RL developer companies that are working to bring RL companies, PR and revenues to SL.
The plus is that RL brands have to be much more resident-sensitive on inworld issues, which should lead to a lower impact and value-added ad displays.

This had to be one of the funniest meetings ever on SL. 10 years from now when other read this chat log they will be laughing their butts off. We had a person wanting a free bear to another spamming about flower tip jars to the cat fight between Sarah & Cynthia.
I really wished Jack would have rezzed a boxing ring in the middle so everyone could have enjoyed themselves alot more. The meeting talked about c#nts & twinkey's.
One person seemed to think Linden Labs would choose their ad system. Come on get real. Wouldn't you think Linden Labs might be bringing in a RL ad company to design some kind of ad system so it benefits everyone? Maybe IBM has been designing a system. Maybe it will be opt in to view ads on your screen you can't cover & by viewing them you get bigger weekly payments from Linden Labs.
People that want to earn a few extra lindens could opt in to view ads on their SL viewer. The ad system could have ad terminals land owners rez on their own land (not 16M lots) that others could rent their ads from & maybe owner getting like 25% of the ad purchase.
Entropia Universe a few years back before I joined SL had a ad system come inworld. It was run by Massive which is own by Microsoft. These screens showed clips like 30 sec ads like tv commercials. The ads you saw were regional to be effective. One time I saw a commercial for Wendy's. Another time it was for a new movie coming out. I think Dell or Gateway ran an ad on it. And the players in game could rent their own ads to go on these screens.
When OCT 1 comes I hoping there is a new TOS so everyone knows the rules. This way people can't say I didn't know about that change on ads or sale signs etc.
I'm sure the past few weeks & the next few weeks Linden Labs lawyers have been rewriting & rewording a new TOS to make sure it covers the new changes.
We will see how Q4 08 & Q1 09 go if more people return to mainland since there will be no more adlots. By the end of the meeting I sure Jack was hungry or twinky's or donuts.

I've made that argument about people remaining on the WSE. Now that this 'battle' is 'won' I hope you'll take the fight to the guy who is holding your believers hostage. People who are trusting you. I respect you Sarah, just saying, I hope.
By the by, I really don't believe the land barons that championed this 'rebellion' are the cause for the change. The same arguments after three years suddenly worked? Seems like the ego talking. It's dollars and cents. I'm sorry.

Anyway Jack's office hour was not a pretty sight, I'm not sure exactly what was achieved but it boils down to the way Linden Lab roll out policy, it's half assed way too often.
The licensing system should have been announced with the blog on certain types of advertising being deemed outlawed. The discussion could then have focussed around that.
I know that chat log doesn't read well on all sides but it's bloody frustrating when one side just won't accept what's happening, they feel like they're being shafted, which is how too many of their neighbours have felt for too long, but too many questions remain about this policy and that's not a healthy situation.

I agree that it's about Linden Lab's bottom line. They realised there's gold in them there hills when bay City went to auction but I'm not convinced about the longevity of these tactics to try and get higher upfront fees from auction.

Whatever LL's motives, I'm not bothered by them. I've talked with some of the 'rebels' about voicing their 'outrage' by just not paying tier. Doesn't surprise me that they wouldn't, this is, of course, a battle of financial self-interest on all fronts. What I find daunting is those I suggested this to responded with awe. Like they'd never thought of it before. Maybe I'm not close enough to understand it. Ah well.

Cause whether your honest or not is up for debate, only you really know. The truth is we all knew that SL would be changing rules, which is fine. I may have even made suggestions to LL employees, that aren’t really conducive to my business in order to find a happy medium. But arrogance, name calling, and having nothing to contribute to the conversation that would help SL prosper is the reason why were all in this dilemma.
Read the speech over and over, 1000 times. I wasn’t there belittling everyone constantly cause I cant stand your virtual guts. But on the other hand we have a lot of self proclaimed Lindens responding to ? not asked of them, and basically trying to shout down others because they didn’t like their views. After attending the meeting I came to realize that only 1 side was voicing their opinions at most of the meetings. Most people in SL don’t care either way. Its just like RL politics, whoever runs for office has the say. And just like RL politics everything is done A@$ backwards. I’ve done my part in making suggestions to help SL prosper, whether they listen to any of us or not is up to them. Advertising is needed, some aspects of the ad biz obviously need to go. I honestly thought the ruling in February was pretty fair.
All business cycles come to an end. I can think of one more that may be affecting a lot of people at the meeting that’s coming to an end soon too. But as with all ends there is rebirth, if your able to adapt. I can adapt, will you be able too?

I doubt Sarah hates herself at all... theres much to like about her.
But ROBO, i have to ask, doesn't it bother you that EVERYONE in Sl hates YOU?
No one likes, you , no one wants you there and everyone will throw a party when you are gone.
How does that not bother ones conscience, to be SO hated by SO many people? I was in SL less than a week when I first heard your name and how it is synonymous with all that is bad and greedy and hated in SL. Do you ever think about that at night when you go to bed? Or are you so narcissistic that you think ALL these people are wrong?
You just dont care that you are top of the list of who everyone wants GONE from SL? Not because of any money you make, but because of your absolute lack of respect for any human being but yourself.
I will never understand a person so has such lack of compassion for his fellow residents, SL or RL, that he would come on this blog and actually try to argue his point.

No you were not belitting
No you were not belittling others there, you were asking the same questions over and over and over again trying to find your new loop hole to continue more of the same that you have been doing. And I feel that there has been a lot of positive outcome from Jacks meetings. After all as of Oct. 1st people like you can no longer take advantage via ad farming. He did listen to both sides. I'm sure he heard more than his fair share of both. He just decided to go with what was best for the community as a whole and not a handful of ad farmers who have abused the system. So far everyone seems very happy and excited about this new rule. Like I said before I was only responding to her comment to me, and even today I am still recieving "Thank You for calling her what she is" type messages. The only thing I am a tad bit sorry for is pulling his office hour off topic for a few moments. Not for what I said.
Assume what ever you would like about my real life. I know I'm very happy, have a great marriage, and a great family. Money has never been top priority in my life, so I'm not really worried about that, and as for esteem. Well I just came back from the SLCC where I had a wonderful time with wonderful friends and feel great about myself and where I am in my life. I think we had this talk awhile back when you were quick to point out what type of home you live in and how much you pay in taxes. We have very different prioritys and views of what makes a person happy so you'll never understand where I'm coming from. My hate for people like you has nothing to do with my own life, and everything to do with how you abused the game and community I love.
