Google Lively Virtual World

So after someone on the forums linked an article about the new Google Virtual world called lively that started out with the line "Well this sucks for Second Life" I had to take a look. After I figured out my lost user name and password for Google I had it up and going.  The first room I entered was a beach scene with a good handful of people standing around not saying much of anything.  There were two guys with the same avatar joking about being long lost twins, and some other guy letting everyone know that his dick was hard.  Well that part did remind me of SL, but the rest not so much.  If felt more like a IMVU type setting.  Biggest and most cool difference between this and imvu is that the virtual rooms you throw together on Lively can be imbedded in your blog, or any webpage you would like. It wasn't all that great looking around by myself, but when Cristiano from SLU made a room and we all popped in, I had a lot of fun playing around with the animations and learning to function in lively with friends.  I even made a few quick youtube videos.  These aren't fun or exciting videos, but they do let you have a fast look and give you a feel for how Lively works.

This one was within my first 5 minutes of being there and making my own beach room.

And this one walking around Cristianos new pad chatting and just figuring it all out.

Do I think this will compete with Second Life? Well no.  You don't have the freedom, the ability to make your own content, the avatars aren't that easy to make unique, and you can't have sex or make money.  I do however think it's a fun little place for social interaction that has a lot of possibility.  I think if anyone should be scared it should be IMVU.  SL can sit back and continue to enjoy it's place on top of the virtual world mountain for now at least.

My Room

I do think it's pretty cool that everytime I go into my room, I find other SL'ers hanging around playing with lively and chatting.

Google had a pretty awesome virtual world already

Google had a pretty awesome virtual world already.. GoogleEarth. It has everything a virtual world needs except avis and an economy. (There is limited building capability and you can add comments, photos, etc.)

But they built Lively from the ground up and it seems to be a disappointment. If they can let you build rooms on a virtual earth, Google would have a killer app. But Lively just isn't that killer app... not yet at any rate.

It looks like they have a monetary system in place, although everything right now is labeled "free". If you do some digging you'll find user content that is not available for non-beta testers. There are a ton of clothes that only fit avatars that you cant choose from the list.

I would definitely be more inclined to use this if you could create your own avatar and content, even if there was no compensation for others using my content. In fact, I kinda hope it stays a free for all like everything else Google.

I think even when they start

I think even when they start to allow user created content it will still be more like IMVU than SL, so I don't really understand why there are so many people and websites compairing Lively to SL.  I think the biggest advantage they have over SL is Google's ability to advertise although the two games are very different.

Novelty?

I like the fact that you can embed your room onto your own site.

I was also wondering if one created a popular room if you could sell it........hmm the selling Rooms Business ???

I smell an IPO

McSnerd? What do you think, Sarah?

It's alright.  Still

It's alright.  Still doesn't have teh appeal to me that SL did.  I will be keeping an eye on when user content can be created and how it's created.  If it's anything I'm capable of I'll be playing around with it for sure.  This is a lot like IMVU was for me.  Fun for a few days, but on the end I wind up back in SL. Will be interesting to see how it develops and catches on.

Otay

I'll be waiting for the nod, then. I bet you'd still be playing with it if they had a purple streak for you hair. Fess up.

Yea I long for a avatar that

Yea I long for a avatar that looks like my sl self when I'm in there, but I'm starting to get used to my avi there.  What sucks though is that with a click or two, any other avi could look just like me. Your right about the hair.  I was bummed creating her with no purple hair or eye options.

Day 2

It's just day 2....I'm just waiting to see a pink TV....on day ?

That sucks

Most people can not log in because it keeps saying "joining room", google forums are full of it.
